Now I now where are the buildings that I need pretty well. The most surprising for me probably is the work load of homework - but I like it. It is also one of the things that I am struggling right now - I barely finish my homework and assignments right before the classes start. As the semester progresses I will try to manage my time better so I would be ahead of my readings and homework rather than behind. And I also plan to make an exercise plan for myself so I could keep myself in shape. But I know this is going to be one of the greatest experiences of my life!juditehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10478488533667810253noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5503949461885083530.post-72129757988540641012010-01-15T19:36:00.003-07:002010-01-15T19:48:31.509-07:00Post #3--After my first week of classesWell, after my first week of classes, I'm feeling pretty good. A little overwhelmed with classes, but I'm learning how to balance my time between classes and organize my day so I can study more effectively. The biggest challenge I think I will face now, is keeping that schedule. Being able to keep up with the workload. For the rest of the semester, I'm pretty sure that I just need to keep going. Put school first. There are a lot of things that a new student needs to get used to, and it may take a while, probably more than one semester, but it's worth it.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5503949461885083530.post-34486096359983770902010-01-13T21:59:00.002-07:002010-01-13T22:14:19.307-07:00Post #3--After my first week of classes
Wow it is already my second week in BYU. I love the teachers, all my classes, and the level of learning we are required to achieve.

The most surprising thing has been how fast I am getting to know the campus. The first couple days of classes were so intimidating, and I always had to stop and ask for directions. I wondered if I would ever learn where all my classes were....but here I am in my second week of classes, not having to get my schedule out between every class!

My biggest challenge so far has been being able to find the right classes to add or drop. There was a class that I wanted to drop and, because there are so many teachers and classes, it took a while for me to organize my schedule and get to be familiar with each of my courses' outlines and syllabuses.

In order to be successful, I am going to read all of the assigned reading. I need to read each chapter before the class that will cover that chapter. I plan on getting involved so that I don't get homesick also. This will help me stay focused of school. I'm going to be responsible and study when I need to be studying.

I am REALLY excited for this semester and future semesters here at BYU!JECKhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17315857137710598633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5503949461885083530.post-3058109249910103452010-01-13T17:24:00.002-07:002010-01-13T17:32:08.449-07:00Post #3 After First Week of Classes
Well, most people who are expecting a rigorous college experience would probably be jumping ahead like I did. It was surprising for me that everything is starting out slowly- probably because I'm in mostly introductory level classes, and even though BYU is considered hard, anyone with time and work ethic can get ahead apparently. I'm just surprised by how easygoing things have been- but then again, it's a pleasant surprise.

My biggest challenge so far has been finding parking and figuring out sure places to sit my car down. It's annoying when I assume a lot will be open because it was open the previous day, only to find that all the spaces are full in 4 different lots. I guess I have to carefully calculate my time and get there just before a cycle of classes begins- (sinister laugh while putting tips of the fingers together)- yes, carefully planning is key.

In order to be successful I plan on staying at least one class period ahead of the lecture in my reading and homework. I figure that if I can manage to stay ahead while I'm here without a job, keeping up with my reading and homework won't be so difficult once I get into a job and a legitimate schedule. Also, things just feel easier if I stay ahead, and I feel better about myself- like I'm actually a smart kid.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5503949461885083530.post-21704691391538522642010-01-13T09:01:00.000-07:002010-01-13T09:02:57.905-07:00Post #3 After My First Week of Classes
What has surprised you?

How little work I actually have to do. My biggest surprise and disappointment was the fact that for me to take Polynesian dance class I have to take it as a normal class, I had been taking this class since I was 8 in and out the School as an extracurricular activity and here at least this semester I'm not going to be able to take it. My second surprise was to see so many people that is already married and have kids, I knew there would be some but not that much.

What has been the biggest challenge so far? My biggest challenge is still the cold, and the fact that I get lost, for example I still wandering how to put money in my card, and sometimes to find the books, or the way out of some place ;).

What are you planning on doing for the rest of the semester in order to be successful? I knew there would be a lot of people on campus but the sheer volume of people streaming out of the MARB around 10:50am on Mondays and Wednesdays is still amazing to me. I am also surprised that I feel so comfortable and at ease here. I thought I would feel lost but I have never felt so "found" as I have this past week.

One of the biggest challenges for me has been meeting people and making the amount of friends I expected to. It is almost like there are so many people that it's hard to get to know anyone. I have also been having a hard time feeling organized and managing my time, which is a constant battle for me. The most difficult challenge I still face is finding a job.

Over the semester I plan to stay on top of assignments rather than procrastinate (hopefully.) I also plan to get more organized and use my time more wisely than I have been known to do. I am looking forward to a challenging yet successful semester.ktkleinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12223429310320797507noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5503949461885083530.post-61927593041096351652010-01-11T16:53:00.003-07:002010-01-11T17:04:39.204-07:00Post #3--After my first week of classesI didn't know much about Brigham Young University, but I was surprised to see that many people had chosen to come here to do their education. I had seen on BYU television that this was a big campus, but viewing it in person is just, different. I should have known better, this is a great university and many people would be coming to take care of their education.
My biggest challenge so far is working out my schedule. I've chosen to major in Geology as it is the closest thing on campus to paleontology, and I didn't have the required classes in my schedule. My original Geology class was Introduction to Geology, and the professor (who preferred that we call him Master Skinner) told me I needed to take Geology 111. I was also told to see Dr. Brooks Britt, a paleontologist on campus. He also suggested I take Chemistry 105. I had to drop some classes to make room for them, but Chemistry was filled up online, so I had to get a Permission-To-Add code to get into the class that wouldn't cause problems with the rest of my schedule.
For the rest of the semester, I plan to follow a plan in a book my Mom found in a book at the Church Bookstore called How to get Straight A's, which have ideas of how to do college level work. I've been doing good with some of the stuff, but when I work out the schedule and have it posted up in my room, I know I will succeed.Davidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16949695717838626950noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5503949461885083530.post-24068899288338991602010-01-06T16:10:00.003-07:002010-01-06T16:17:23.951-07:00After attending NSOI loved my NSO experience. The students and staff that helped to organize everything were very friendly in helping to understand what I needed to do to have a fun, enjoyable and helpful experience. I was able to meet new people and even see some old friends. I enjoyed listening to Dr. Bell, as he addressed a topic that I much needed and I was able to feel better. I also enjoyed the end with all the little skits. They were very funny and expressed themselves very well. I think by far the most valuable thing I learned from NSO is that BYU wants to help you. As and long as many of the processes of getting in and getting things approved are, BYU has a system set up to help you and wants you to let them help you so they can make the system flow easier for other students in the future.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5503949461885083530.post-68926147289720666812010-01-06T10:58:00.002-07:002010-01-06T11:07:12.152-07:00post #2 after NSOHow does it feel to finally be on campus?
It was such a great experience!! The campus it's so big and students and professors as well are so nice and helpful, I have to say that felt so lost at the first time but then I just started asking questions and everybody was willing to help me.

How did attending NSO help prepare you for the coming semester?
I helped me so much because they answered all my questions before I asked them haha. And all the events were very helpful to know more students like me, they were filling so confused and afraid about been on campus for the first time.

What was the most enjoyable part of NSO?
Everything!! all the activities were pretty fun and enjoyable. And even better, they were spiritual too.

What was the most important thing you learned?
I 've learned that everybody who is in this campus has a objective and we have to approach it, everybody is making sacrificies lilke me, everybody wants to be a better person, in other words we all want to learn more to be perfect for the eternal life, and BYU definetly has all the tools that we need, BYU is the only campus where we can learn how to be spiritually strengthen and find who we really are and where do we want to go.jaazvaldezhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00133169219060726434noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5503949461885083530.post-57496080148920274142010-01-05T21:03:00.002-07:002010-01-05T21:07:43.466-07:00Post 2 After

How does it feel to finally be on campus? I feel glad to be here. I was nervous about being around people at first, but everyone's friendly and not like people portrayed in stories and films. I'm also kind of excited to begin my new life here as a cougar of BYU. I feel if I do everything I'm supposed to do, I can accomplish anything that this new turn in life brings me..
Attending NSO was a good idea. I met some new people like Sereen and Nick and was able to get along with them. They helped with some questions I had and helped me with things I didn't know. I didn't get to be with them when we toured campus, but I did run into them again during the visit to the Education in Zion exhibit.
I think the most enjoyable part of NSO was the viewing of Tradition of Honor. It made me feel proud that I came to this university and that I was raised to live the way the Honor Code lists. I want to continue to live life like that and know that I will want to come back to Brigham Young University when the semester ends.
I think that the most important thing I learned during NSO was the fact that you shouldn't be afraid to make friends. You can't let fear stop you from reaching out to people and socializing with them. If you do, then you won't be able to enjoy your time on this planet. It's okay to feel nervous, but not getting to know those around you will only make you stay alone and without friends. I'm glad I met new people at NSO and look forward to seeing what this year will bring. I admit, I did enjoy learning that the tallest building on campus was named for the shortest prophet and that the library holds some of the governments federal papers.Davidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16949695717838626950noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5503949461885083530.post-84206039428579468092010-01-03T14:31:00.002-07:002010-01-03T14:40:46.661-07:00Post #2 AfterI got here- I looked around and I saw- nothing. There were only about ten people in sight, and everything looked the same. It felt nice just to finally be here and know that I don't have to wonder anymore, and that I'll be getting to know this campus and these people really well. Having checklists of things I need, and a specific time and opportunity to do it allowed me to toss out the overhanging anxiety about the little things that I needed to do- now it's just school!
My favorite part of NSO was the tour. Just making sure I know where things are, and figuring out that my classes aren't far apart helped me to get an idea of travel time and made sure that I don't worry about looking like a complete idiot the first day when I inevitably get confused on campus. Just hanging out with my group mates and asking questions was really fun because it gave me a chance to laugh and just relax about my upcoming experience.

The most important thing I learned was really that I am here for a reason. Though I'm not positive of what that reason is, the fact that I have been led here is not coincidence. I also got a sense of the type of people that are here, and where I will fit, which, to me, is an extremely important thing to know. If you don't know where you fit, you don't know who you are or what you are capable of.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5503949461885083530.post-21186988013346304692010-01-03T11:31:00.002-07:002010-01-03T12:00:52.765-07:00Blog #2--NSOHello everyone!

I got on campus on January 1st. It was really quiet, because not many were there yet. But the campus is huge! When I had to find the building WSC for our NSO, I got lost. That is no surprise, as I usually get lost in unknown locations. But now I feel more comfortable, cause while I was wandering around the campus trying to find the right buildings, I got a chance to get to know what is around me. I met my roommate, and she is super nice, so I'm starting to feel more and more comfortable here.

Yesterday was NSO. And I'm really, really glad I went. NSO prepared me for studying, it helped me to understand what I am really here for. I got really inspired and excited to enjoy all that I can here on campus. Also, understanding the history of this school and that it was built from determination, inspiration and hard work, I could appreciate this wonderful opportunity to study here even more. I definitely think it is a must for all new students to attend NSO. There is one more important thing - at and after the NSO I opened up more and was not that embarrassed or scared to talk to new people, so that was a blessing.

I must say, I enjoyed all parts of NSO. I really liked the talks given at the convocation, and the movie. That was the part when I got most inspired, and learned the most. But the most enjoyable part for me was the performances at Tradition of Honor. I was amazed of the beautiful voices and inspiring video clips. And it was also very fun way how to explain (or remind of) the Honor Code.

I have a really important thing that I learned during NSO. It was from a talk given at convocation called Fear & Faith. It talked about how fear influenced our decisions and our actions. That sometimes we base our decisions on fear. For example, in fear of not being good enough, we settle for less when we choose our future profession and do not study what we want most. But instead we should focus on making our decisions of faith. And whenever we are faced with a dilemma, see which decision is based on fear and which is based on faith, and choose the one that is based on faith. That really struck me, as I understood that this particularly applies to me. I made a resolution to not be afraid that I will not be good enough or what others are going to say, but do what I want most and do my best.

I recommend for all new students to attend new student orientation. It is unforgettable and really helpful experience.
juditehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10478488533667810253noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5503949461885083530.post-63252125450805376492010-01-03T10:21:00.001-07:002010-01-03T10:23:31.736-07:00Post #2 After
How does it feel to finally be on campus?

It feels unreal. I feel a lot less apprehensive about the coming semester, although I am still a little nervous.

Attending NSO is probably the best choice I have made so far in regards to preparing myself to experience BYU. I got to experience what it is like to be on campus and see more of what it is like to be a student here. I am also a little bit more comfortable with where everything is. I feel like everyone who helped with NSO gave a positive yet realistic view of what BYU is all about and I finally see myself "fitting" here. I am feel prepared to meet the challenges of the coming year with a much better attitude than I had before and I am actually really excited for what lies ahead.

The best part of NSO was probably meeting new people and making a few friends. I also immensely enjoyed the Education in Zion exhibition.

The most important thing I learned is that an education at BYU is about more than expanding the mind, but rather, it is "an education for the whole soul."ktkleinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12223429310320797507noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5503949461885083530.post-12349351382101811272010-01-02T09:59:00.009-07:002010-01-03T17:06:14.486-07:00Post #1--Before NSOComing to a university and being away from my family for a long time is something that I find challenging to do. I haven't been away from the place where I live with my parents for the longest time and this will serve as one of the biggest trials of my time. I'm also scared that something will happen while I'm away and I won't be able to get back in time to help. I'm also worried that this post won't be counted as eligible since I forgot all about the blogging.
There are some things I am excited for. I know BYU has a great bookstore filled with series that I love reading and are bringing in new books all the time. I just need to make sure I don't spend all my money in there. I'm also looking forward to learning about the Earth's past in geology and history classes. I'm also looking forward to making new friends.
I don't really have any questions that need answers. I came to BYU once to visit my brother and I know where a lot of the places I need to go to are.
I hope to gain a better liking for the school by going to NSO and learning more about what this school is about. I would also like to meet new people who are friendly and will want to be friends.Davidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16949695717838626950noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5503949461885083530.post-27864983093315024722010-01-02T00:46:00.002-07:002010-01-02T00:59:05.499-07:00Post #1--Before NSOWell I meant to post this earlier but didn't have time until now. Hopefully its not too late since NSO still hasn't started.

My biggest worry about coming to BYU is that I wont have enough time to do everything. I'm going to be taking 18 credits and doing some online work, so with homework and trying to meet new people and all that hopefully I can survive. I've never been very social and so living by myself in a new place, I'm kind of worried about how that will work out but I'm excited for it too. I can't wait to get started so I can see what it is really like going to school here and find out if the classes really are as hard as people say they are. I got my associates degree at a community college in Arizona and the classes there were way too easy. I'm looking forward to more challenging classes.

The only questions I really have are mostly related to my major. I plan to talk to someone about it once the semester gets started.

By participating in NSO I plan on being able to get my ID card and get my bike registered and meeting new people and getting a little better feel for the campus. I'm looking forward to attending NSO in the morning and can't wait for school to start next week.Tylerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09113162345788275427noreply@blogger.com0
